Log Volume and Weight Calculations

In order to calculate a cut length of wood's weight we need the volume in cubic meters (m3) and the density in Kilograms per square meter (Kg/m3).

Volume is calculated according to log scaling rules. The Smalian formula is the official log scaling rule for the Province of British Columbia because it is practical and works well where logs are bucked prior to scaling. Different regions around the world may scale according to different standards or measurements.

(T2 + B2) x L x 0.0001570796

Where:

  • T is the TOP or narrower inside bark dimension
  • B is the BOTTOM or wider inside bark dimension
  • L is the length in Meters

The formula essentially calculates the volume by multiplying the area at the center of the log by the entire length. An explanation of the formula along with it's derivation can be found at The Smalian Formula.
